Why More Men Are Getting Vasectomies in 2026 Than Ever Before

Something has shifted in how men think about family planning. Over the past several years, vasectomy consultations and procedures have increased dramatically across the United States—rising by more than 25 percent since 2022. The trend is not limited to any single region or demographic. Here in Miami and South Florida, we are seeing it firsthand: more men, across a wider age range, are taking an active role in contraception by choosing vasectomy.
As a urologist who performs more than 500 vasectomy procedures per year, I want to explain what is driving this trend—and why it makes sense for so many men and couples.
What Is Behind the Surge in Vasectomy Demand?
Several converging factors are contributing to the rise in vasectomy rates nationwide:
1. Men Are Taking Ownership of Reproductive Decisions
There has been a cultural shift toward shared responsibility in family planning. Many couples recognize that vasectomy is simpler, safer, and less expensive than tubal ligation—and men are stepping up. CDC data from 2022–2023 shows that approximately 6.8 percent of men ages 18 to 49 have had a vasectomy, up from 4 percent in 2015–2017. Among men 45 to 49, that number climbs to over 14 percent.
2. Changes in the Reproductive Health Landscape
The 2022 Supreme Court ruling on abortion access prompted many men and couples to reevaluate their contraceptive options. Research published in the International Journal of Impotence Research in 2025 documented significant increases in vasectomy interest and procedure rates across the country following the decision. Consultations rose by more than 20 percent in some states, and the trend has not reversed—it has become the new baseline.
3. Better Awareness of Modern Techniques
Today's vasectomy is not the procedure your father had. The Tear-Free, no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy uses a needle-free injector for anesthesia and requires only a single 4mm opening. There are no stitches. The procedure takes 15 minutes or less. Recovery is measured in days, not weeks. As men learn more about how minimally invasive the modern vasectomy actually is, the hesitation disappears.
4. Younger Men Are Entering the Conversation
While vasectomy has traditionally been most common among men in their late 30s and 40s, younger men—particularly those ages 26 to 35—are now among the fastest-growing demographic for vasectomy consultations. According to a 2024 KFF survey, 31 percent of men ages 26 to 35 who have not had a vasectomy said they would consider one.
What the Updated 2026 AUA Guidelines Say
The American Urological Association released updated Vasectomy Guidelines in 2026—the first major revision in over a decade. The guidelines reinforce that vasectomy is a safe, highly effective form of permanent contraception and provide updated recommendations for counseling, surgical technique (including fascial interposition and mucosal cautery), and post-vasectomy semen analysis. These evidence-based guidelines reflect the current standard of care that Dr. Robbins already follows at our practice.
Why Experience Matters More Than Ever
A 2025 study published in the Journal of Urology analyzing nearly 500,000 vasectomies found that procedures performed by urologists had significantly lower failure and repeat-procedure rates compared to those performed by non-urologists. The data also showed that the absence of a post-vasectomy semen analysis increased the odds of failure.
At Urological Consultants of Florida, Dr. Robbins brings thousands of procedures of experience to every vasectomy. He utilizes the most current techniques—including fascial interposition, mucosal cautery, and the no-needle, no-scalpel approach—to minimize complications and maximize patient comfort.
